Homework Policy

Homework is a necessary part of learning. Meaningful homework is reasonable, related to the class work, emphasizes quality rather than quantity and is consistent with the grade level and ability of the student. It should be an integral part of the curriculum, and parents should expect their child to have regular homework.

All students are required to purchase a planner in which they keep records of assignments.  Planners are available for sale at the Welcome Back Orientation as well as each site’s administrative office.

Homework may be a written assignment, a project or reading, and may be given over weekends and holidays.  The minimum amount of homework for each student should range between 30 minutes and two hours, based on grade level.  Completion and comprehension of homework may also be assessed through quizzes, class discussions, or larger class assignments.

Ivy Academia Will...

  • Provide a list of supplies student will need at home and at school.
  • Provide appropriate homework on a daily/weekly basis in a variety of subject areas.
  • Communicate with parents, as needed, regarding completion of homework and class work.
  • Provide to parents an email address for teacher communications regarding their child.

The Parents/Guardians Will...

  • Occasionally be asked to provide appropriate materials for students to use (list to be provided by teacher).
  • Provide a home environment which values education, encouraging the child to do his/her best in school.
  • Ensure that students complete homework regularly and neatly, in compliance with the homework policy, and return it to school.
  • Check and enforce the return of homework to meet deadlines.
  • Attend conferences with teachers or other school personnel as needs arise.
  • Obtain a folder and/or backpack (site appropriate for the student’s locker) for their child. It must be a reasonable size and be used to carry appropriate and necessary school related materials only. The child’s name must be permanently located somewhere on/in the item.

The Student Will...

  • Purchase and maintain a planner available from Ivy to keep accurate records of all homework and assignments.
  • Have necessary materials at hand.
  • Follow study techniques appropriate to the subject.
  • Through homework, apply and practice skills learned in class.
  • Strive for quality work.
  • Do your best.

Testing

Testing is an integral part of any school.  Our students are assessed, or tested, each spring with the California state STAR tests, which assesses students’ mastery of standards.  Other testing or assessments may include physical fitness tests, math and language arts placement assessments, English Language assessment, testing for honors placement or IAGATE testing.  High school students have CAHSEE, PSAT and testing for qualifying for college classes.

The University of California Talent Search asks schools to identify students in grades 7 and above who have scored Advanced in a STAR test, or scored at the 90th percentile in a standardized test.  These students become eligible for participation in events and activities at various campuses of the University of California, eligible for early testing, recruiting and scholarships.
